Merit-Based Aid (Scholarships)

All prospective students who submit an application to AU are evaluated for a multitude of merit-based scholarships, such as the Deans’ and Presidential awards, based on the information provided in their admissions application.

American University National Merit Scholarships

In order to be deemed eligible for a National Merit Scholarship sponsored by AU, students are required to attain the status of a National Merit Finalist and indicate AU as their primary choice of institution by the deadline published by the NMSC.

All finalists will receive $2,000, annually. The aforementioned scholarship is subject to renewal for a maximum of eight semesters, provided that the students maintain a satisfactory level of academic progress.

AU FRESH MERIT AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS

All students who have been admitted, irrespective of their nationality, shall be evaluated for academic/merit scholarships that they are eligible for.

Typically, students who have been granted scholarships possess outstanding academic qualifications and demonstrate exceptional leadership abilities. The majority of scholarships that are based on merit do not necessitate an application for financial assistance.

Nevertheless, we highly recommend that candidates for merit-based awards fulfill the necessary forms for need-based aid, if they anticipate requiring financial assistance in addition to their merit award.

Those who receive merit-based awards and have submitted an application for need-based financial aid will be evaluated for any additional need-based aid that they may be eligible for, beyond the sum of their merit award.

Scholarships for graduates are granted by the academic departments, and the Office of Financial Aid does not oversee the allocation of these awards. The majority of scholarship applications have a deadline of February 1.

OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIPS

Conducting a comprehensive scholarship search requires a considerable amount of time. It is highly recommended that students proactively pursue and submit applications for private scholarships offered by local entities such as commercial enterprises, religious institutions, and community associations.

It is mandatory to inform the Office of Financial Aid about any external awards received from any sources, such as external scholarships, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), employer tuition remission, and parent’s employer tuition benefits.

To comply with this requirement, you may transmit a facsimile of your award letter(s) to the Office of Financial Aid at 202-885-1129.

Our personnel will revise your financial aid award letter with the sum and conditions of the award and apprise you of the influence of your scholarships on your institutional and federal awards.
